Examining how the diet can be individually adapted

The new study is part of a larger project in which the researchers are looking for biomarkers in the intestinal flora or in the blood to be able to predict health outcomes. The researchers want to investigate whether individuals can be divided into metabotypes ? different groups based on how individuals? metabolism and intestinal flora respond to different diets, and whether these groups show different IBS symptoms.

?Finding objective biomarkers that can determine if an individual belongs to a certain metabotype for IBS symptoms could make life easier for many individuals with IBS. There are many indications that it is possible to use objective markers for more individually tailored dietary advice,? says Professor Rikard Landberg, who leads the Division of Food and Nutrition Science at Chalmers University of Technology.

The new IBS study also clearly shows large individual variation when it comes to how different people are affected by a specific diet.

?Even if at group level we only see a moderate effect from fodmaps and no effect of gluten provocation, it may well still be the case that some individuals react strongly to these foods. That is why it is important to account for individual differences,? says Elise Nordin.

(12-21-2021) Sparta Sport Center will close this 2021 with nine gyms, two more than it had at the beginning of the year. The chain has inaugurated a new sports center in Cuenca, with which it makes its debut in Castilla – La Mancha.

Sparta Sport Center is already present in eight different autonomous communities. The chain of gyms opened its ninth gym last Saturday at the Mirador Shopping Center in Cuenca. With this, the brand opens in Castilla – La Mancha. For now she has only repeated in the community where she is from, Navarra, where she manages two gyms (Pamplona and Tudela).

The open gym in Cuenca consists of 1,500 m2. This facility has a fitness room, spaces for personal training, directed classes and a nutritionist. After studying the impacts of mining cobalt ? a common ingredient in lithium-ion batteries ? on communities in Africa?s Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), an interdisciplinary team of researchers led by Northwestern University is calling for more data into how emerging technologies affect human health and livelihoods.

Such data can inform policymakers, industry leaders and consumers to make more socially and ethically responsible decisions when developing, funding and using green technologies.

The case study and perspective paper will be published on Dec. 17 in the journal One Earth.

?We have the framework and tools available to compare the environmental costs of automobiles that run on fossil fuels to battery-powered vehicles,? said Northwestern?s Jennifer Dunn, who led the study. ?I can tell you the greenhouse gas emissions per mile for either one. But when it comes to the social effects, we don?t have the same capability for direct comparison. For many engineers, it?s easier to measure or calculate environmental effects than to understand the social conditions in a faraway country that they have never set foot in.?

Dunn is an associate professor of chemical and biological engineering at Northwestern?s McCormick School of Engineering and associate director of the Center for Engineering Sustainability and Resilience. To conduct the case study, Dunn led an interdisciplinary team of engineers, anthropologists and public health experts.

Environmental vs. human costs

For years, researchers have been conducting environmental life cycle assessments (E-LCA), in which they comprehensively and systematically calculate the environmental impacts of a product all the way from the extraction of raw materials required to make it to its use and ultimate disposal. More recently, researchers have attempted to develop similar frameworks to evaluate social life cycle assessments (S-LCA), which can be used to understand how emerging technologies affect human health and well-being.

To identify barriers to and opportunities for collecting better data for S-LCA, the researchers conducted exploratory field work in cobalt mining communities in the Lualaba Province, DRC. The team collected qualitative data through in-depth interviews and focus-group discussions with miners and other community members. Paper co-author Gabriel Bamana, an anthropologist on faculty at Normandale Community College in Minnesota, is native Congolese and therefore could provide significant cultural and historical context for the study.

?For this type of work, it?s important to work across fields in order to be informed,? said Sera Young, study co-author and associate professor of anthropology at Northwestern?s Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. ?It might be difficult for engineers who are developing the technologies to understand the social effects. By working together, we can form a whole picture of the consequences of resource extraction.?

Unintended consequences of decarbonization

What Dunn and Young discovered was deeply troubling. They found cobalt mining was associated with increases in violence, substance abuse, food and water insecurity, and physical and mental health challenges. Community members reported losing communal land, farmland and homes, which miners literally dug up in order to extract cobalt. Without farmland, Congolese people were sometimes forced to cross international borders into Zambia just to purchase food.

?You might think of mining as just digging something up,? Young said. ?But they are not digging on vacant land. Homelands are dug up. People are literally digging holes in their living room floors. The repercussions of mining can touch almost every aspect of life.?

Waste generated from mining cobalt and other metals can pollute water, air and soil, leading to decreased crop yields, contaminated food and water, and respiratory and reproductive health issues. Miners reported that working conditions were unsafe, unfair and stressful. Several workers noted that they feared mineshaft collapses.

As industry leaders move toward decarbonization to slow, stop or even reverse human-caused climate change, technologies are increasingly relying on batteries instead of fossil fuels. Unfortunately, the effects of these technologies on social well-being are understudied and data related to these effects are insufficient for use in policy-making decisions.

?If we?re trying to be do-gooders by caring for the environment, then the environment shouldn?t be limited to only the natural environment ? but also the human environment,? said Young, who studies water insecurityacross a range of global contexts.

Offering new solutions

Throughout their work, Dunn, Young and their team found little in the way of established guidance on best practices for conducting S-LCA, including little guidance on how to conduct interviews and a lack of consensus on how to use and analyze data from stakeholders.

?Most of this work has been conceptualized by natural scientists who have limited knowledge about social impacts,? Dunn said. ?Measuring environmental effects of a technology is sometimes as simple as adding a sensor to measure emissions. But trying to measure intangible social effects like mental health is much harder.?

?And things that aren?t measured remain invisible,? Young added.

Because the quality of the social impact assessment relies on the quality of the data, the researchers identified five categories of data sources, which can be leveraged to better understand localized effects of mining:

(1) interviews and focus groups of affected community members;

(2) local public records, including land-related court claims, documentation of forced migration and publicly available health records;

(3) cross-culturally validated scales, including data collected by national statistics agencies and organizations such as UNICEF and the World Bank;

(4) data collected for the Sustainable Development Goals; and

(5) remote sensing and imagery, including satellite imagery showing how farmland has changed after cobalt mining is established.

The researchers believe such methods can be applied to other scenarios beyond cobalt mining to gather social data surrounding emerging technologies.

?We have a long way to go before we can put S-LCA results in front of decision-makers in the same way we can with E-LCA results,? Dunn said. ?In the meantime, our society is going through huge changes, including climate change, so we feel a sense of urgency. We hope that policy makers recognize the urgency of the human costs of cobalt mining sooner rather than later.?

Just before the political reform that turned the Federal District into Mexico City, when the mayors were still delegations, in 2017 when the public spending exercised by the then delegations reached its historical maximum with just over 47 billion pesos, later year after year the allocations were decreasing until reaching an amount of 43.7 billion pesos in 2020.

A characteristic feature of perovskites is a specific crystal structure. Numerous material combinations of different atoms and molecules are possible, some of which exhibit ferroelectric, superconducting or photovoltaic properties. Although known since the early 19th century, the class of materials was only recently discovered for photovoltaics. Just 10 years of research were needed to raise the efficiency to the level of conventional silicon solar cells at an unprecedented rate. Compared to silicon crystals, perovskites have several decisive advantages: they can be produced easily, cost-effectively and in an energy-saving manner. The layers of perovskite cells, which are only a few hundred nanometers thick, can also be well applied to conventional silicon cells. While silicon-based technology is already considered mature, such ?tandem solar cells? offer new opportunities to further improve the efficiency of solar cells.

A question of stability

?The Achilles? heel of perovskite solar cells is their low durability,? explains Prof. Christoph Brabec of the Helmholtz Institute Erlangen-Nuremberg (HI ERN) at Forschungszentrum Jülich. ?Classic silicon modules are quite durable. Even after more than 20 years in practical use, they lose little of their performance.? Solar cells made of perovskite, on the other hand, usually lose efficiency after just a few days or weeks. Early cells could literally be watched aging, with efficiency dropping within seconds or minutes of turning on the lights in the lab.

?The solar cell we have now presented in Nature Energy, on the other hand, impresses with its exceptional stability. The values are certainly among the best ever measured for a planar perovskite solar cell in a long-term test,? Brabec said. The illuminated cell had to survive 1450 hours at elevated temperatures around 65 degrees Celsius in the laboratory and remained largely stable throughout the test period. At the end, it still had 99 percent of its initial efficiency. ?Long-term prediction is always difficult. But the perovskite solar cell we have now developed could certainly be operated for more than 20,000 hours under normal circumstances,? estimates Prof. Brabec.

Success through high throughput

The result is no accident. In their search for the right material, the researchers systematically tested hundreds of different perovskite mixtures for their suitability using high-throughput methods. The researchers then used the best ones to build their cell. ?Even if you only rely on proven components, you come up with tremendous numbers of possible compositions that we can produce and test automatically using our methods. In other studies, there are sometimes even significantly more,? explains Dr. Yicheng Zhao, who played a key role in the scientific investigations. ?That is why we need to use a systematic approach to identify the best material combinations.?

Another important optimization step concerns the stable contacts of the perovskite within the cell, which is built up in several thin layers. The ionic dopants or metal oxide nanoparticles commonly used to contact the cell tend to undergo secondary reactions at higher temperatures. This reactions can even lead to corrosion of the metal electrodes, as the researchers at HI ERN were able to demonstrate through measurements and scanning electron microscopy. Contact and electrical conductivity thus deteriorate at an early stage.

?To improve stability at the contact point, we packed the entire electrode in a kind of protective shell,? Zhao said. A new double-layer polymer structure, with the bottom side undoped and the top side doped with a non-ionic dopant, protects against degradation and ensures that the contact is maintained. On the one hand, this architecture protects the very sensitive interface to the perovskite, and on the other hand, it shows exceptionally stable conductivity, even at elevated temperatures.

For the future, the HI ERN researchers are now aiming for further efficiency improvements. ?With an efficiency of 20.9 percent, the tested cell does not yet fully exploit the potential. 24 to 25 percent should be possible in the near future,? explains Yicheng Zhao.
