The international press presented its Lights this evening, distinguishing the best French films of the year. Like last year, this 27th ceremony took the form of a TV show broadcast on Canal+. Check out the full list.

Despite the complex health context, the international press, gathered within the Académie des Lumières, following the example of the Golden Globes in the United States, presented its Lumières to French cinema on January 17, making it possible to give an initial trend of the price season in France.

Awarded for a quarter of a century, the Lights inaugurate in January the season of film awards, rewarding the talents of French cinema of the past year. Created in 1995 by the will of a British journalist, Edward Behr, and a French producer, Daniel Toscan du Plantier, the annual prizes of the Académie des Lumières are intended to offer a different, international perspective on French cinema.

Lumières 2022: Lost Illusions leads the nominations ahead of Titane

During a special broadcast, thus replacing the ceremony which should have been held at the Olympia, the best of French cinema was celebrated. The program was presented by Laurie Cholewa as well as thirteen correspondents from the Académie des Lumières, and broadcast free-to-air on Canal+.

“After a year 2021 marked by the roller coaster of the pandemic and the traffic jam that followed the long-awaited reopening of theaters, the Académie des Lumières and its 95 voters, international press correspondents from 36 countries, are happy to be able to support more than ever the excellence and diversity of French cinema”, organizers said.

A year after The Things We Say, The Things We Do, L’Événement, directed by Audrey Diwan, won the highest distinction, a few months after her Golden Lion in Venice. Its main actress, Anamaria Vartolomei, is crowned best actress.

Annette, by Leos Carax, leaves with 3 awards: best director, best image and best music. A little disappointment for Illusions Perdues, nominated 5 times and winner of a single distinction, best screenplay for Xavier Giannoli. The same is true for Titane, which leaves with only one prize, that of female revelation for Agathe Rousselle. The Palme d’Or 2021 was nominated in 4 categories.

During an interview, George Clooney spoke about his career and the distribution of his films in the cinema. The man takes the opportunity to talk about the advent of streaming.

George Clooney talks about his career ? Credit: Netflix

George Clooney is not ashamed of a long career as an actor. It’s simple: the actor chained the blockbusters at one time. But like many former celebrities, the man is now turning to directing and putting himself on stage. As a director, we owe him The Marches of Power, Monuments Men or midnight in the universe on Netflix. Without forgetting that for several years, the latter has favored small productions. And the former interpreter of Batman in batman and robin takes the floor today to talk about his career. According to him, cinemas no longer want his films.

« Cinemas haven’t rushed to accept my films for a while »

For several years now, movie theaters have seemed to favor big shows. Many professionals believe that these places of conviviality could continue to highlight the huge productions in the future. We obviously think of Marvel films or even big shows like Dune by Denis Villeneuve. A conclusion also drawn by George Clooney. The man denounces this somewhat gloomy future of cinemas and thinks his films will no longer be shown there. The actor also speaks the advent of streaming.

You always have to fight. I’m doing a movie with Brad Pitt for Apple and it’s a big budget. The secret is that you have to work hard to ensure a theatrical release. There’s nothing more exciting than watching a comedy to a full house. Or a horror movie. I find that part of the job is to make sure to protect the integrity of the release of feature films in cinemas. But honestly, theaters haven’t been quick to accept my films for a while. They tell me : ” Yeah, that ain’t really our thing anymore “. So streaming opens the door to keeping those stories alive.

? George Clooney

Many speak of a gradual disappearance of small films to land on streaming platforms. Bad news for many.

Kevin Williamson, the most recurring screenwriter of Scream, returns to the initially planned trilogy plan with Scream 5 and 6, before the 2022 version.

Whereas Scream is the only one who can stand up to Spider-Man : No Way Home at the US box office, its production companies must lick their chops and congratulate themselves on the biases of its relaunch of the saga, ten years later Scream 4, which was itself an addition to what seemed like a properly concluded trilogy (our reflection on the entire saga Scream).

We knew that to get to the footage we saw in 2011, Scream 4 had been modified a lot since its introduction, to bring new situations and new characters. Kevin Williamson, the screenwriter of the saga, explained that it was planned to give continuity to all this in a Scream 5 and Scream 6, which would have formed a second trilogy. Warning, SPOILERS from Scream 4.

At the microphone of Bloody Disgusting, the screenwriter returned to several production anecdotes, and took the opportunity to talk about the films that could have acted as a direct sequel to Scream 4, when director Wes Craven (deceased in 2015) was still working on the saga:

“In Scream 5, Jill Roberts arrived at college, and a series of murders started on campus. The killer was someone who knew that Jill was herself a murderer in the previous film. The killer was doing all this to for Jill to be exposed and exposed, so she had to cover up murders that weren’t hers.

It was the story of a meeting between two serial killers. And Sidney Prescott was a teacher at that school […] Scream 6 was going to answer what happened between Dewey and Gale. Sidney would be in the movie, but he would have been much more focused on Gale’s arc.”

High Scream Musical

If the concept of this Scream 6 is less clear, we can at least tune the pitch of Scream 5 was curious, not to say enticing. However, the death of Craven had to decide the studios to make a clean sweep of his work, both for its integrity and for being able to establish new bases, which could eventually be used for new sequels (after all, the 2022 film has the sober title Scream).

Nevertheless, if new films were to see the light of day, it would not be impossible for some of these ideas to take shape (even if it seems unlikely, given the way WIlliamson talks about it with detachment and hindsight). Without knowing if we have missed out on great films, we will be satisfied with Scream 2022, visible in theaters since January 12, 2022.

For this Monday evening, CNET France therefore recommends the film My Neighbor Totoro and the series The discreet life of small beasts.

What movies and series to watch on Netflix tonight?

A Wonderful and Heartwarming Ghibli: My Neighbor Totoro

Synopsis

Mei, 4, and Satsuki, 10, move to the countryside with their father to be closer to the hospital where their mother is staying. They discover nature all around the house and, above all, the existence of strange and wonderful animals, the Totoros, with whom they become very good friends. But one day, little Mei disappears…

The opinion of CNET France

Directed by Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited away, Porco Rosso, The Howl’s Moving Castle) in 1988, the film that will give its mascot (the famous Totoro) to Ghibli studios is a sweet family chronicle, summery and wonderful, with a power that is still just as evocative.

The story is simple and without real “big bad” as in the most popular animated films. Here, we first let ourselves be carried away by the rhythm of life of a family in transition, and seen from the height of children. A point of view full of innocence, wonder and obviously filled with its share of magic, which will tip the film into a more wonderful second part.

Like a Alice in Wonderland, My Neighbor Totoro brings together two worlds that rub shoulders without knowing it, and which meet through the eyes of children. An open door that the spectator – whatever his age – can only cross. On the other side, scenes of masterful poetry, playing with our little universal pleasures – noises, smells, sensations – develop before our amazed eyes, and transport us as rarely.

As in many Ghibli, the film obviously has many levels of reading, and if the youngest will rightly linger on the adorable Totoros and the Cat-bus, adults will note the tender melancholy, and its aesthetic beauty to die for. My Neighbor Totoro is a huge film, and a universal and timeless adventure, to discover or see again without moderation.

A touching documentary series: The discreet life of small animals

Synopsis

This documentary series filmed in the United States introduces us to the fascinating life of small animals and their relentless struggle to survive in unsuspected worlds.

The opinion of CNET France

Sometimes the craziest of adventures and the most hectic action scenes take place on a more modest scale and away from human eyes. It is in any case the bias of the adorable documentary series The discreet life of small animals (Tiny Creatures in OV).

Whether in the heart of a barren desert, in a barn in the middle of the night, or in a quiet suburban neighborhood, this series tells us surprisingly gripping tales of the survival of small animals. As close as possible to the mice, squirrels and other owls, the production takes on the appearance of a spectacular Michael Bay film, with a lot of slow motion effects and breathless editing.

Of course, the very scripted side, and the voice-over sometimes too present, takes away a little of the magic of the magnificent images and stories offered. But we easily get caught up in these great adventures on a small scale, embodied by the most adorable of animals. A change of perspective that also helps to realize the impact of humans on the world around them.

Far from being reserved for the youngest, The discreet life of small animals can be watched perfectly with the family, and its 8 episodes of 25 minutes will easily fill your evenings with sweetness, action and small thrills.

The road has been long. More than 10 years after having launched the idea of ??a series shot only in Occitan, Amic bedel is today on the way to realizing its dream. After several weeks of filming last September, the film team is now working to refine the six episodes of the Seria broadcast next September on the France platform. Tv. Meeting with the director and founder of the production company Piget Film, Amic Bedel.

The idea for this series came out of our heads, those of Julien Campredon and mine, around a coffee in 2010″, rewinds Amic Bedel. Twelve years later, the director, producer and founder of the production company Piget Films has something to smile about After several weeks of filming between the capital of Occitania and the Balearic Islands, the Seria could finally land on the small screen by the end of the year.

A reward for those who still have a special affection for the Occitan language. Son of Christian-Pierre Bedel, long director of the Occitan Institute of Aveyron (IOA) and insatiable collector of words and gestures of Occitan heritage, Amic fell into it, so to speak, when he was little.

“As a teenager, I went with my father to the Aveyron countryside, my little camcorder slung over my shoulder, to capture some pretty incredible moments of exchange”, recalls the director. Later, with his production company Piget Films, he delivered 50 episodes of another “Biaïs” series.

The goal here again: “Film people at home, in their ecosystem, and see how they value their daily lives, often in a very modest way.” Common point between these two moments, the Occitan language, his “paternal” language he has fun, which he strives to bring to life on a daily basis and which he celebrates once again with La Séria. The pitch: ?Two acolytes have the firm intention of shooting a series in Occitan? announces Amic. Any resemblance to…

Why did you wait so long before embarking on the filming of La Seria?

Quite simply because we had no choice (laughs). With Julien Campredon, we first thought of a feature film. We finally opted for the serial format. Twelve then finally six episodes. In Occitan. We directly made the choice of complexity (laughs). We wrote the first two episodes to try to find funding. I also wanted to shoot a pilot to present it to producers. We shot two 26-minute episodes in 2013 ? which earned me a short year of post-production ? which we presented, for the first time, in September 2014 at Fifigrot, the Groland film festival in 2014. did a few screenings at the cinematheque before presenting it to France Télé, Arte?

Everything seemed to be going well…

Yes, but? The feedback was pretty good, interested. But we were still waiting: “It’s not for us, it’s not for now?” We also met producers who told us cash “your thing is funny but it won’t interest anyone!” I remember a producer from Marseille, who had already worked on projects in Occitan, clearly telling us “never again Occitan!”. For him, basically, it’s a double jeopardy: difficult to produce and finance, and also difficult to find an audience. Few people say to themselves, hey, it’s in Occitan, I’m going to go see! Despite all the encouragement, we have therefore not found a channel capable of broadcasting La Seria. A prerequisite for obtaining funding, aid from the CNC (Centre National du Cinéma), etc.

Why come back today?

It all started again with a call for tenders in 2020. A call for creation in Occitania which puts us back in the bath. I am approaching a co-producer, the company AnderAndera in Saint-Affrique. Things are moving forward, in several directions? and finally, we present this project again to France 3 Toulouse, which decides to follow. All this allowed us to recover aid from the region, that of the CNC. Unheard of for a regional language series. Historical, even (laughs).

The filming also took the team to Narbonne-plage.
@Piget

Where did the filming take place?

It took place over six weeks around September 2020. First in Toulouse, then in Rouergue, in Najac. We also went through Rabastens in the Tarn, through Sète, Narbonne-Plage, Marseille and Majorca. A crazy and exhausting adventure.

With which actors?

I called on the “Dream Team” of Occitan artists. To people I had worked with before and whose work I admire. Musicians? We find Dje Baleti, Caroline Dufau from Cocanha, Laurent Labadie who is a super funny comedian, the duo Marius Blenet and Damien Valero. The two really revealed themselves on this shoot. There is also Pierre Laur, a magical figure in the series. A guy that I really like and that we could see in “Antoinette dans les Cévennes” for example. A great actress too, who doesn’t speak Occitan but who really went down in history: Soleïma Arabi. We will finally have a guest with Michel Cordes, the actor who plays the role of the mythical tenant in “Plus Belle la vie”. His father, Léon Cordes was one of the greatest Occitan poets of the 20th century. A nice little nod!

In dark rooms, we will be entitled to heavy things in 2022. If the pandemic is not completely behind us, cinemas are open again and that is already good news. Life resumes, little by little, its course. If multiple films have been postponed in recent months, we will be able to discover them, finally, this year. Here are the movies you shouldn’t miss in 2022…

Uncharted

The adaptation of the famous Naughty Dog video game has been in the cards for many years. Six directors, twelve screenwriters, many breaks later, Uncharted is finally here. Or almost: the output is fixed to the February 12, 2022. We have never been so close! Tom Holland will play the young Nathan Drake while Mark Wahlberg will be Sully, the hero’s mentor.

The Batman

This year, Robert Pattinson is donning the Dark Knight costume. And as much to say that the fans await this rewriting of the adventures of Batman at the turn? From what we could see through the two trailers of the film, The Batman will be dark and violent and we are curious to see the result. Verdict it 2 mars next.

Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets

Finally ! After three years, the third part of the Fantastic Beasts come back. Grindelwald’s rise to power accelerates and a war between Good and Evil is brewing. Dumbledore’s Secrets hits theaters on 13 avril.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Whereas Spider-Man : No Way Home opened the door to the multiverse on the big screen, the second installment of Doctor Strange will continue the work, and deepen it. For the moment, we do not know the masses about the plot of this new component. However, the second post-credits scene of No Way Home unveiled the first images of the next MCU film. From what we could see, Wanda Maximoff will be there and should help the former Sorcerer Supreme against an evil Doctor Strange?? Appointment on May 4, 2022.

Jurassic World 3: The World After

At the end of Fallen Kingdom, in 2018, Isla Nublar was wiped off the map following a volcanic eruption and the dinosaurs that survived there were then free and co-exist with humans. Outside the secure park. Nothing very reassuring for the future? To discover the June 8 in Jurassic World: The World After.

Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse

If we had our dose of Peter Parker with Spider-Man : No Way Home, it’s almost time to go see Miles Morales. Almost four years later Spider-Man : New Generation, a real nugget of animation, the young hero will explore the Spider-Verse from the October 12 next, in the first part of Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse. And we are really looking forward to it!

Avatar 2

Thirteen years after the release of the first part, Jake Sully and Neytiri return to Avatar 2. Return to Pandora when the lives of the two protagonists are threatened by the Resources Development Administration, a dangerous non-governmental organization… After the phenomenal success of the first opus, this sequel is eagerly awaited. Nothing better to conclude 2022. See you on December 14 to discover Avatar 2.

But that’s not all, of course! Here is the rest of our selection of the most anticipated films in cinemas this year?

Definitely, 2022 will be an excellent year for pop culture fans! Here, we wait above all Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Spider-Man : Across the Spider-Verse, Avatar 2 and The Batman. And you, what is the film you can’t wait to see at the cinema this year?

Interrupted last November following an injury to Letitia Wright, the filming of Black Panther 2 will resume this week.

Here we go again ! The production of the sequel to the Black Panther phenomenon will definitely not have gone as planned. The team of course had to deal with the death of Chadwick Boseman, the interpreter of the King of Wakanda, in August 2020, forcing director and screenwriter Ryan Coogler to review his copy.

It was not until June 2021 that the filming of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was able to begin according to a brand new scenario whose plot has not been revealed but which should logically speak of the succession of T’ Challa in the Black Panther costume. His sister, Shuri, seems to be the perfect candidate to take up the torch.

But then, the interpreter of the latter, Letitia Wright, was injured during the shooting last August, forcing the production to stop in November, once all the scenes where she did not appear have been canned. A new setback which nevertheless did not impact the release date of the film, still set for November 9.

According to Hollywood Reporter, Letitia Wright is now recovered and ready to resume filming in Atlanta. Four weeks of shooting are a priori planned. In this new adventure, the actress will again give the reply to Lupita Nyong’o (Nakia), Danai Gurira (Okoye), Martin Freeman (Everett K. Ross), Daniel Kaluuya (W’Kabi) and Angela Bassett (Ramonda) .

But also Winston Duke (M’Baku) who, for the occasion, would have negotiated a significant salary increase, according to sources from the American media. The reason ? His character would have a more substantial role in this second episode.

Remember that two other MCU films are expected in dark rooms before Black Panther: Wakanda Forever: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (May 4) and Thor: Love and Thunder (July 13).

These Marvels are part of our selection of films to see in 2022:

Despite its first place at the Chinese box office for its first weekend, Matrix 4 gets off to a catastrophic start and is hugely disappointing.

After a calamitous domestic box office, there were concerns for the health of the franchise’s fourth installment. Matrix, Matrix Resurrections. Especially since we love the Wachowskis, for whom we have already cried a few failures at the box office, like that of Cloud Atlas.

The end of 2021 and the beginning of 2022 marked a period of nostalgia. Ghostbusters: Legacy, West Side Story or the mastodon Spider-Man : No Way Home took us back to a time when the world was not yet imploding. And if after almost two decades of absence we could expect that Neo’s adventures in the Matrix once again fascinate viewers, the film’s box office seems to prove otherwise. In the United States first (where it only collected 35 million dollars in almost three weeks of exploitation), but also in China, where the film has just started its exploitation.

You have the choice between two pills. The blue pill is a sweet dream in which you can rejoice that Matrix 4 was number one at the Chinese box office during the weekend of January 14 to 16, 2022. By taking the red, you will learn thatit suffered little competition from productions at the end of their exploitation, and yet it only collected $ 7.5 million during the weekend of its start.

Matrix 4 has therefore now collected 140 million at the global box office, for a budget of 190 million dollars. A flop that is not about to be resolved thanks to the Chinese release of the film, since the public seems not to have appreciated it very much according to the ratings of the latter on sites like Maoyan or Douban (largely lower than those Chinese productions). Matrix 4 should thus complete its race nearly 15 million in revenue, a total but predictable disappointment.

Still, the competition seemed light. Yes Matrix 4 was the weekend champion within the Chinese box office, it was only rivaled by Embrace Again (a romantic comedy set against a backdrop of a pandemic), which brought in 6.8 million over the weekend, for a total of 126.6 million. The Thriller G Storm has, meanwhile, brought in 4.2 million for a total of 85 million in revenue. Short, Matrix 4 suffered the competition of only two not really sprawling productions, and at the end of their exploitation.

In his defense, Lana Wachowski’s production has suffered massive piracy since its simultaneous arrival on the HBO Max platform, December 22, and inevitably it pays the broken pots. All the more so when it comes out on Chinese territory almost a month after the rest of the world and has suffered half-hearted reviews.

When you feel a little lonely in the cinema

However, this is not totally a surprise, since other productions have broken their teeth on the wall of the Middle Kingdom before it, for quite similar reasons. In November 2021, Jungle Cruise, blockbuster worn by Dwayne Johnson or Emily Blunt offered a disastrous start at 3.3 million dollars. Worse Mulan, partly designed for Chinese viewers, had crashed when it was released in September 2020, in particular because of its simultaneous release on Disney+ a few weeks earlier (and therefore to piracy).

Short, Matrix Resurrections continues to suffer the pangs of the box office almost everywhere he goes. So even if you won’t change much about it, it’s always possible to go see it in French cinemas to help it get a little better.
