In the body we have over 600 muscles that help us move, lift things, and even pump blood through the body. Some of them work together with your bones to help you walk, run, bend over, ride a bike, etc. If they are healthy, performing any type of activity of this type is easier. How is this achieved?

In addition to eating a healthy and balanced diet (prioritizing fruits, vegetables, whole grains and avoiding saturated fats, sugars, etc.), it is important exercise regularly. There are many physical activities that can help your muscles, in addition to walking, jogging, playing tennis, jumping, dancing, swimming, cycling, etc.

Do we have to prepare the muscles before performing any type of physical activity? Is it enough to do it later? Or the more the better, before and after? Before clearing up these doubts, it should be noted that, on the one hand, what can help us keep fit, on the other it can hurt us if we don’t do it right. And precisely the answer is that doing stretches well means doing them before and after exercise, because they act in different ways.

  • The previous stretches help us to prepare the muscle before doing any type of sports practice and keep the muscles flexible and strong, something necessary to achieve a certain range of movement in the joints.
  • Without post-exercise stretching, muscles shorten and tighten, risking joint pain, strains, and muscle damage.

The goal of stretching is to produce elongation and internal tension in the muscle and its tendons. But not all stretching is the same.

  • The static stretch allows you to stretch the muscle to the point of feeling slight discomfort, holding the position for about 10-20 seconds or after feeling mild tension (we can hold on to a stable object to maintain balance).
  • With dynamic stretchingInstead, gentle repetitive movements are performed, such as arm movements.
  • The ballistic stretch it is similar to the dynamic but incorporates bouncing or jerking movements to increase the range of motion (be careful with the rebounds so as not to damage the muscle). In most cases, the benefits have been studied over static stretching.

Take care with post-exercise stretching

Muscle injuries occur when the muscle is subjected to too much stress, usually when it is stretched under pressure, such as lowering a heavy weight. And it is precisely to help prevent sprains, strains, and other muscle injuries that stretching should be done. And if they are done before and after exercise, the better.

But we can’t just start stretching because if we do it cold we can injure ourselves. Therefore, we must start by warming up for a few minutes, for example, walking slowly and gently swinging the arms.

  • Stretches before exercising: if we stretch before, it will be less likely that we force a muscle more than necessary, as recognized by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases from the United States. Stretching makes the muscles warmer and more flexible because by stretching they prepare for the subsequent physical effort. In addition, with stretching an increase in flexibility is achieved, essential to avoid injuries. Other benefits of stretching before is that they promote circulation and reduce muscle tension.
  • after exercise: stretching is important to eliminate muscle tension and restore relaxation.

But many people stretch after a workout thinking it will ease muscle soreness in the days after a workout. Nevertheless, stretching for this purpose may not have the desired effects. According to one revision of 12 studies conducted in 2011, stretching right after exercise would actually have no effect on muscle soreness for days afterward.

It also doesn’t seem to reduce the risk of back or lower extremity injury. But yes can reduce the risk of some muscle injuries, ligaments and tendons, especially dynamic stretching. It is important to stretch afterwards to get your body used to the new activity, which is less intense. It is as if the body needs a time to slow down. And with stretching this is achieved.

Not everything goes when it comes to stretching

Factors such as:

  • Do not stretch without first warming up (jumping, easy running, etc.). When we get endogenous heat for the body, we get a good response from muscle tissue, we increase heart rate, metabolism and the volume of blood that reaches the tissues.
  • Stretch just enough: the ideal is to achieve a smooth and sustained tension, paying attention to the muscles that are being stretched. If we go too far and go beyond our possibilities, we can suffer a tear or breakage of the fibers. Therefore, it is important to know our limitations to adapt the stretches.
  • Breathe while stretching.
  • Don’t bounce.

Although stretching is always associated with playing sports, it can also be done as another activity to improve the health of muscles and joints. Therefore, they can be part of another training. The guidelines The American Fitness Index (ACSM) tell us that it is best to do static and dynamic stretching two to three times a week.

A weight loss program can lead to type 2 diabetes remission even in individuals with a normal BMI, thanks to the loss of body fat particularly in the liver and pancreas, according to a British study presented at the Diabetes UK Professional Conference. 2022

A weight loss program can lead to type 2 diabetes remission even in individuals with a normal BMI, thanks to the loss of body fat particularly in the liver and pancreas, according to a British study presented at Diabetes UK Professional Conference 2022

The ReTUNE (Reversal of Type 2 Diabetes Upon Normalization of Energy Intake in Non-obese People) study, funded by Diabetes UK, involved 20 people with type 2 diabetes lasting less than 6 years and a body mass index (BMI) up to 27 kg / m2.

After 1 year, the participants had lost 9% of their weight. Body fat decreased significantly to the same level as controls without diabetes, with a reduction in liver fat, total triglycerides and pancreatic fat. These findings were accompanied by increases in insulin secretion and decreases in glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and fasting blood glucose levels.

“The results indicate that the etiology and pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes is the same, regardless of whether the BMI is normal or elevated,” said the lead author. Roy Taylor, professor of medicine and metabolism at Newcastle University. ?This information should make a profound difference in the advice doctors provide to their patients. One of the dramatic things about dealing with diabetics is that they feel a lot of resentment that health professionals tell them not to lose weight. ‘

The first line of treatment is to reduce body weight
These findings support the theory that there is a fat threshold above which type 2 diabetes develops, Taylor said, according to which weight loss is the first-line treatment for those with type 2 diabetes. , regardless of their BMI.

The DiRECT study had previously shown that a low-calorie liquid diet, followed by a gradual reintroduction of food and a weight loss maintenance program, can enable and maintain type 2 diabetes remission after 2 years in overweight or obese people. . 36% of the 300 enrolled patients achieved remission and maintained it for 24 months, compared with negligible changes in the control group.

Inspired by the results of the DiRECT and DROPLET trials, the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) has launched a low calorie diet treatment program for overweight and diabetic people.

“This groundbreaking study advances our understanding of why type 2 diabetes develops and what can be done to treat it,” he commented. Chris Askew, managing director of Diabetes UK. ?Our ambition is that as many people as possible have the opportunity to go into remission and live much longer. The results of ReTUNE bring us significantly closer to achieving this goal, demonstrating that remission is not only possible for people with a certain body weight ».

The reduction in weight and body fat led to remission
For the ReTUNE study, 20 subjects were recruited with type 2 diabetes for less than 6 years and a BMI of 21-27 and were compared to 20 matched controls, with a follow-up of 52 weeks. Patients had a mean age of 59 years, 13 were female, mean BMI was 24.8, mean HbA1c was 54 mmol / mol, and mean duration of diabetes was 2.8 years.

Fourteen of the patients were taking metformin at enrollment and two were on gliclazide. Drug therapy was suspended when diabetics entered a 5% incremental weight loss program, followed by 6 weeks of weight maintenance.

Overall weight decreased by an average of 9%, while body fat decreased from 32% at baseline to 28% after 1 year (P <0.001), equaling the percentage observed in controls. Liver fat also decreased significantly from baseline (P <0.001) to approximately the same level as controls after 1 year, a pattern also seen with very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Pancreatic fat decreased steadily and significantly over the 52-week follow-up (P <0.05), although it remained above the level observed in controls. Insulin secretion increased significantly over the course of the study (P = 0.005) and ended just beyond the lower limit of the normal range after 52 weeks.

During follow-up, the 14 patients who achieved remission of type 2 diabetes significantly decreased their fasting plasma glucose (P <0.001) glycated hemoglobin levels (P <0.001).

Controversial, unfortunate and tragic vehicle accident in BCS extinguished the dream of “Ray” and Paco Mufote, emblematic Baja Californian actors, musicians and cultural managers, of whom without their contribution, the history of performing arts in Northwest Mexico is inexplicable. They participated in the filming of “El Elegido”, a film that Netflix films in the towns of Loreto, Mulegé and Santa Rosalía, on the coast of the Sea of ??Cortez

Two giant hearts, chameleons, enthusiasts for the performing arts, endearing, passionate about life, the stage and its seats, have stopped beating at the highest point of their careers. Two theater men with the same value and weight: Raymundo Garduño Cruz and Juan Francisco González Aguilar, both 47 years old; Baja Californian talent by adoption and origin who lost his life in a tragic vehicle accident on the Santa Rosalía-Loreto Peninsular Highway in Baja California Sur, performing until his last breath what they loved most: personifying.

Managers of culture and music, Garduño and González are honored with respect by the theater and film community of the entity that not only endorses their legacy, but also finds no explanation for the history of the performing arts in Northwest Mexico without them. The pain drowns the words in the soul, but the chapters of the acting heritage of the one known as Paco Mufote and “Ray” will be sealed with the overflow of tears of love from a guild dejected by the unfortunate event, which reflects on the working conditions of the filming of ?El Elegido? According to the expert opinion of the National Guard on the road event in which the actors died, speeding, disregarding traffic conditions on the federal road and those of the vehicle -by the driver Alberto Jiménez Gómez, 21 years old- ,

caused the loss of control of the 2010 model panel with license plates FZR874A and the fatal incident on the morning of Thursday, June 16. Act in which the actresses Margarita Peñaloza Luna, Cristina Martínez and Yeray Albelda were also transferred to the Loreto and La Paz airports, in the middle of a film break that has been temporarily suspended, after starting processes in April to end on the 15th. of July.

After the funeral acts of Garduño and González, on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 21, the Tijuana Cultural Center commemorated their life and legacy.

?It seems that institutions have no soul, but when we found out, CECUT turned gray. They were both our friends. We celebrate the love and discipline of two men who learned that theater is larger than life, reinvent themselves, live in metamorphosis, work as a team and delve into life, into the complexity of the characters to live another life. They have left a great legacy?, celebrated Vianka Santana, head of the cultural venue, adding to the condolences of BC and BCS authorities.

It should be noted that although Garduño and González worked together on the film “Here comes the devil” to Leap of Faith Filmsand days spent in “The Chosen” of Netflixeach one added their credits: Paco Mufote (González) participated in the documentary series of National Geographic “Locked Up Abroad”, in addition to the tapes “Sleep Dealer”, “Norteado”, “Yan She: The man who waits”; as well as the staging “Cristo luz”, “Primero de octubre”, “Oedipo güey” and “L ?arpenteur”. While “Ray” stood out as stage director of “Kikiricaja”, “Immolación”, “No Touch”, “Papá está en la Atlántida” and “Dios es un bicho”; as a cultural manager he is respected for promoting contemporary children’s and youth theater (Children’s Theater Week) and as an actor he contributed to more than twenty plays, television series and the film about ?a 12-year-old boy who, after a freak accident, discovers that he is the reincarnation of Jesus and that he is destined to save humanity. humanity”.

about the fact, Netflix pronounced: ?We are deeply saddened by the tragic accident that claimed the lives of Ray Garduño and Juan Francisco González. Our thoughts are with his loved ones, and those injured. (?) All of us who are in the production of ‘El Elegido’ are shocked (?) We deeply regret the death (?) and we closely support all those affected by this unspeakable tragedy. Redrum has been cooperating with local authorities, initial reports, and witness accounts indicate that all safety protocols were in place and this was an unfortunate accident.”said the company that collaborated for “Narcos: Mexico” (2017), a series in which they experienced their first fatal incident when their location scout Carlos Muñoz was shot dead while exploring remote areas.

For his part, Tijuana actor Yeray Albelda (Alejandro), who acted in “El Elegido” in the role of a miner from Santa Rosalía, told ZETA that there was no precariousness in production, as has been referred to on social networks.

?Maybe we’ve gotten used to long calls that shouldn’t be, but I’ve never seen red lights to abandon production. Who has spoken on social networks (Rick Zazueta) is not involved in the production at all. They paid us what was due, they compensated the families and covered my medical care. I don’t remember the time of the accident, I handed over the hotel key, we went down to buy burritos and from there the ambulance. Surely we came singing and joking?.

Albelda, who suffered a concussion and clavicle and shoulder fractures, added:

?I cannot say if the driver went to a party or did not sleep well, but he had just arrived as a relief from other drivers along with more crewteam and other go, I didn’t know the road, I was coming from Mexico City. Maybe that was the mistake, he was overconfident, he drove fast, he lacked experience, the roads are treacherous. They weren’t new trucks, but they were decent for commuting and didn’t have slick tires. My character will not continue, history will be rewritten. We were three miners, returning without them would be painful and complicated. I did not meet them on the set, but many years ago, abandoning the performance would be an insult to their memory because they had many plans, they lived a full moment, they auditioned for other series and movies.

The also teacher of performing arts sentenced: “Time is not eternal, we must take advantage of it, I reflect on what I want to leave to future generations of theater.”

Regarding the death of the actors, the National Association of Actors (ANDA) recalled that ?It is everyone’s job to take care of the safety of both the actors, the crew and the drivers themselves in any production. (?) Do not incur in possible negligence.

Finally, Concepción Talamantes Cota, in charge of the Baja California Film Commission, emphasized to ZETA that hiring local drivers would give greater peace of mind due to knowledge of the road, and although the Commission provided guidance with locations, permits, service providers and requested the hiring of insurance for actors and personnel, there is no regulation or support to create obligations for production .

At the close of this edition, the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Baja California Sur did not issue an official expert opinion on the events in which the Tijuana residents lost their lives.

(The Chosen One), adaptation of ?American Jesus? directed by Everardo Gout, under the production of Redrum for Netflix.

Almost half of cancer patients at risk of malnutrition (even before treatment) with serious consequences: in Italy the right to receive appropriate nutritional support is not yet guaranteed at all

Before starting treatment, more than 6 out of 10 cancer patients have lost weight and half are at risk of malnutrition or are already undernourished: this leads to more probabilities of surgical complications, less effective therapies, greater toxicity and a worsening quality of life. of patients. A set of problems that very often results in reduced survival, especially for patients with a head-neck or gastrointestinal tumor. For this reason, it is fundamental, right from the diagnosis, to pay attention to weight and nutrition trends: both oncology specialists and those directly involved and family members should not underestimate the onset of difficulty in eating or the loss of several kilos. In fact, the solutions available to guarantee a fair dose of food are many (starting with food for special medical purposes), but not all people who need it are recognized today the right to receive appropriate nutritional support.

Define an equal procedure for all patients

In order to overcome the critical issues existing in our country, a Consensus Document was recently drawn up, the result of the joint work of numerous specialists and promoted by NHSc (Nestl Health Science), which through 13 key points aims to improve the management of the entire path , starting from the level of training and awareness on the part of clinicians and the need for the early involvement of an expert in clinical nutrition within the multidisciplinary team, in order to promptly intercept the most at-risk cases and intervene in the most appropriate way. To standardize the management of nutritional problems, ensuring timely and effective interventions for all patients, it is necessary to define treatment paths and shared protocols that establish the roles and responsibilities of all the actors involved in the management of the malnourished cancer patient – explains Paolo Bossi, oncologist and associate professor of Medical Oncology at the University of Brescia -. A correct approach should include standardized screening protocols that help in the definition of situations at high risk of malnutrition for which counseling or nutritional intervention is always provided, according to the approach recommended by the guidelines of scientific societies. Furthermore, the identification of a reference figure who, according to the phases of illness and treatment, guarantees the appropriateness of the patient’s nutritional path and the evaluation of nutritional support. Finally, it is recommended to organize computerized records that allow the rapid calculation of the “score” for the definition of the patient’s nutritional status and facilitate the exchange of information between the experts of the multidisciplinary team.

Nutritional screening at diagnosis

An observational study conducted in Italy on almost 2 thousand patients showed that more than 50% had nutritional deficiencies, 9% were in a state of malnutrition and 43% were at risk of malnutrition already at the time of the first oncological visit. Even in cases where a state of malnutrition is diagnosed, about half of the cases are not treated or are not treated adequately. And malnutrition has been associated by numerous studies with worsening quality of life, increased complication rates or worse post-operative outcomes, prolonged hospital stay, decreased tolerance to anticancer treatments and increased toxicity. often leads to pre-term suspension of care. And all of this, of course, can lead to lower survival from the disease. The timely diagnosis of a fundamental nutritional problem to ensure the correct management of cancer patients – underlines Riccardo Caccialanza, director of the Dietetics and Clinical Nutrition Unit at the Fondazione IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo in Pavia -. Early interception of nutritional problems is essential for setting up appropriate and effective support: if started at the time of diagnosis or as soon as the risk of malnutrition is detected, in fact, supportive therapy can improve both the quality of life and survival of the sick. . Nutritional screening should be performed at the time of diagnosis and repeated systematically at regular intervals throughout the course of the disease, especially in patients who are most at risk of malnutrition due to their type of cancer, stage of disease or treatment undertaken.

What causes weight loss

Excessive weight loss (which should be evaluated as a vital parameter right from the diagnosis of cancer) can depend on several factors: decreased appetite, the presence of difficulty in swallowing, digestive problems or impaired ability to absorb nutrients, but also anxiety, fear and depression can contribute to some extent. In addition, inflammation of the oral cavity, intestinal disorders, a sense of nausea are just some of the most frequent side effects caused by anti-cancer treatments, which can significantly worsen the lives of patients and even those who recover. In order to define the Consensus Document, with the aim of proposing a new and optimal management model for the patient with head-neck and gastrointestinal neoplasia, an analysis of the state of the art in Italy was carried out with regard to the management of clinical nutrition in oncology and the main problems that characterize the different phases, the different actors involved and the possible improvement actions have been identified. The 13 key points, established by specialists and patient representatives, also concern the adequate training of health professionals, the presence of an expert in clinical nutrition in the multidisciplinary team, the need to implement both home artificial nutrition when necessary and the access to nutritional support in those who need it.

Now, thanks to a study conducted at the University of Montana?s Flathead Lake Biological Station, scientists have a greater understanding of the amount of microplastics polluting Flathead Lake, the likely sources of these microplastics and what can be done to prevent more from finding their way into the lake?s world-renowned pristine water.

Recently published in the scientific journal Environmental Pollution, this microplastics study was led by FLBS visiting researcher Dr. Xiong Xiong from the Chinese Academy of Science?s Institute of Hydrobiology. Xiong came to FLBS in 2018 on a mission to learn more about microplastics in freshwater lakes in relatively unpopulated regions and to help provide insight to aid in their management.

?It looks quite clean, but if this clean lake is suffering from plastics, I want to check that,? Xiong said at the start of his study four years ago. ?I think people think (plastic pollution) is more serious in the ocean, but many people live inland, and we need the freshwater. It may affect our daily life more directly than the plastic in the ocean.?

To conduct this study, Xiong joined FLBS Director Jim Elser and a team of biological station scientists to sample surface waters at 12 different locations around Flathead Lake over a one-year period. They then examined the samples for the occurrence, distribution and types of microplastics.

After analyzing the samples, the team discovered that, while levels of microplastic pollution measured in Flathead Lake were lower than in lakes in densely populated areas, Flathead had microplastic levels similar to or higher than lakes studied in other less-densely populated areas of the world.

In other words, Flathead Lake is now home to microplastics and new microplastic particles are arriving every day.

?Microplastics in lakes can interfere with food webs because animals like zooplankton and fish can ingest them,? Elser said. ?They can carry toxins into the animal, displace real foods and physically damage digestive tissues.?

There are three main ways that microplastics reach Flathead Lake, according to the study. One way is atmospheric microplastic deposition. This occurs when microplastics are transported to Montana from other more populated areas by the atmosphere (e.g., wind and clouds) and then fall into Flathead Lake ? either directly from the air (known as dry deposition) or through snow and rainfall (wet deposition).

Microplastics in dry deposition were highest in the fall season, while wet deposition was highest in the winter season.

?This study showed that microplastics are literally raining ? and snowing ? down on us out of the sky,? Elser said.

The other two other ways in which microplastics can enter Flathead Lake are through the lake?s major river inputs, which include the Flathead River on the north end of the lake and lakeside sources near larger shoreline communities such as Polson, Bigfork and Lakeside.

At the mouth of the Flathead River, the biggest source of microplastics is most likely from plastic waste disposal, which in Flathead County is primarily landfill rather than recycling. Although landfills located in the Flathead Watershed are not open pit, microplastics are mobilized via leachate (water that picks up contaminants) and via the soil of the landfill when winds carry away dust.

Meanwhile, in the more highly populated shoreline areas of the lake, researchers found that concentrations of microplastics were especially high. In addition to plastic packaging, many of today?s clothes are made from fibrous plastics. These synthetic fabrics break apart on a microscopic level during washing and then are transported and deposited into our waters through home septic drain fields and community water treatment plants.

Plastic waste from other human activities also is worthy of attention. A variety of water activities such as kayaking, sailing, speedboating, water skiing and fishing are important outdoor pursuits in the Flathead Watershed. But these activities involve plastic boats, ropes, floats and fishing line that can degrade and transform into microplastics over time.

Though the levels of microplastics in Flathead Lake are relatively low, they are concerning. However, researchers are quick to point out that much can be done to reduce their presence in Montana?s waters.

?While we need to know more about microplastic impacts in our lakes, we know enough to act to reduce plastic inputs now,? Elser said. ?Each of us can reduce our use of plastics, properly dispose of them and implement impactful approaches such as laundry filters. We can also encourage businesses to do the same and for governments to provide facilities and systems to better handle plastics in our watershed.?

Fibrous microplastics can be reduced by improving laundry practices and wastewater treatment or by reducing the use of synthetic fiber material in favor of natural fiber clothing and materials. As an example, a recent study in California found that the adoption of in-line filters in washing machines had the potential to decrease annual synthetic microfiber emissions to natural environments by nearly 80%.

Further strengthening disposal measures of plastic waste by both residents and visitors could greatly help reduce microplastic contamination in Flathead Lake. Such measures include better education about the harms of improper plastic disposal, enhancing plastic waste recycling in the region and reducing the overall use of plastic products, such as single-use plastics common in the food service industry.

When it comes to reducing atmospheric microplastic deposition, researchers said extensive solutions are needed. The total production of plastic waste in the United States is 42 million tons per year, which is much higher than other countries per capita. This suggests that, even in an area of relatively low population, Flathead Lake will remain at risk from microplastics arriving by air until nationwide measures can be taken.

Xiong and his research team said more studies are needed to better understand and address our microplastic problem, not only in the Flathead Watershed but also throughout the world. The good news is that, because human activities are indisputably the only source of microplastics, this is a problem that we have the power to solve.

Additional study authors include FLBS research scientist Tyler Tappenbeck and Chinese Academy of Sciences researcher Chenxi Wu.

He is very big and very venerable. And we don’t talk about Alexander Skarsgård in The Northman (although), but the film’s resounding flop at the box office.

Since The Witch and The LighthouseRobert Eggers is one of Hollywood’s most watched directors. His singularity as an author and the success of his first two stories on a small technical scale (few sets and actors) made him an excellent candidate to enter the very closed club of auteur blockbuster directors. All he needed was an entrance ticket.

Unfortunately, The Northman will not make him the new Denis Villeneuve: despite the presence of Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke or Anya Taylor-Joy, Robert Eggers’ first “big” budget is a huge failure, one of the biggest flop of 2022. ?

PS: Needless to say that we are quite sad about this failure

SINKING FIGURES

First, the budget: there are different stories. The director himself talks about $90 million, while Regency, the lead production company behind the film, is talking about $70 million instead. variety. Still, it’s more than the 65 million dollars initially put on the table, the fault of difficult outdoor production and above all an interruption in filming due to Covid contamination. Please note that we are only talking about production costs here, and that even if we base ourselves on the low range of 70 million dollars, we must add to this the costs of promotion and distribution of Focus Features in the US and Universal in the rest of the world.

A sum that may seem ridiculous if we compare to the average price of the contemporary blockbuster around 200 million dollars, but, as in boxing, you have to pay attention to the weight category in which you are. For a film produced by a minor independent studio, whose story is not the adaptation of a brand, and on the sole faith of the name of a young author known for his productions drawing more towards the arty than the general public, it’s actually a hell of a sum that many directors dream of – randomly, Gone Girl for example was made for 61 million dollars. In its category, and by its epic tone, The Northman is indeed a blockbuster in terms of ambitions.

He had come to cut everything

In view of all this, it is no exaggeration to say that the miserable $68.6 million raised worldwide represents a disaster on more or less all levelsespecially since only half of this sum comes from the American market, the most attractive in terms of revenue. The Northman is a deadweight loss that does not even manage to equal its cost of production, even when estimated downwards. Same Morbiusthe most publicized oven of 2022, does better: with a similar production budget estimated between 75 and 83 million dollars, the vampire put 164 million dollars in his piggy bank.

To tell the truth, The Northman is so weak in terms of (non-)profitability that it plunges directly into the 5th flop of 2022, before 355 with Jessica Chastain ($28 million in revenue for a budget of $75 million), Blacklight with Liam Neeson (15.5 million receipts for a budget of 43 million), and the great dunce of the year moonfall by Roland Emmerich (44 million dollars in receipts for a budget of… 150 million, ouch). How to explain such a failure, a fortiori when the critical reception of the film is unquestionably favorable (without overflowing with enthusiasm, admittedly), unlike the four other dreadful ones? The answer is quite simple: The Northman repelled the general public.

Why don’t you love me?

THE CAUSES OF RAGNARÖK

“You have to have a master’s degree in Viking history to understand the slightest trick in this film”. Don’t laugh, it’s a real comeback that was made by one of the audience members of the disastrous test screenings that were conducted by Regency ahead of the film’s release. Despite the incorrigible popularity of Norse mythology for ten years now (Skyrim, vikings, Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, god of war…), The Northman was seen as too cerebral, too pointed. A simple glance at the rating aggregators of the public is enough to understand it: with a very mediocre B on CinemaScore, the historical-intello-arty-boring image sticks to the skin of the film and prevents word-of-mouth positive.

Give me your ear

Another reason given by Deadline : The Northman came out the same day as A talent in solid gold with Nicolas Cage, a film aimed at exactly the same target audience – rather adults. Bottom line: the audience in question dispersed on launch day and both films crashed. The Northman finished in fourth position at the box office the weekend of its release, a stone’s throw from Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets , sonic 2 (both however already released more than a week before) and The Bad Guyswhile a first place was within reach without A talent in solid gold.

Deprived of both the symbolic momentum and the media spotlight that a first place brings, The Northman only has handicaps. Add to that a rather shy marketing (probably because of the announced failure and to avoid spending too much) and badly done, interspersed with a few monumental fairies (the film posters in the American subway… on which the title was missing), and the recipe for disaster is complete.

Nah, but it’s forbidden this kind of error normally damn it…

NO VALHALLA FOR ROBERT EGGERS?

Is there a lesson to be learned from this bitter failure? Yes, and it is unfortunately very dark. In the current state of the market, there is virtually no prospect for big budget independents, what are commonly called middle films: a budget that is neither astronomical like the gasworks of the majors and their steamroller marketing, nor small, even microscopic, like most independent productions. Of course we will be taken out Everything Everywhere All at Oncethe indie hit of the year that only cost $20 million, but cases like this only happen once a year, and they always overshadow the farandole of broken pots behind them. .

Certainly, The Northman is a more expensive work and more difficult to access, but the concomitant crash ofA talent in solid gold – also well received by critics, but lukewarmly received by the public – says a lot. The whole question now is whether this lack of perspective is due to a lack of curiosity among the public, or to the excessive number of films released each year, in a market that is moreover saturated with giga-blockbusters monopolizing the media space. . A market that is still not recovered from the Covid and therefore all the more hostile for who is not Batman, Tom Cruise or a T-Rex capable of imposing itself in less than a week at the box office.

A big muscular guy wants revenge on another big muscular guy, it’s still not hard to understand

Last big unanswered question: what will happen to Robert Eggers? Despite his recognized and undisputed talent, he has probably just seen his chance to establish himself as a new director of popular auteur films pass under his nose. Knowing also that he has already made it known that joining the machine (especially superheroes), like Chloé Zhao and James Gunn, does not interest him, the prospects in the world of big-budget films are reduced for this author with an already difficult pedigree, on the edge of the experimental.

The solution could come from outside support: James Gray could not have done Ad Astra without the active and financial support of Brad Pitt, and it is interesting to note that Denis Villeneuve made the leap into mega-budgets after fifteen years of career and thanks to Ridley Scott, who entrusted him with the keys to blade runner 2049. And, despite the film’s financial failure, that didn’t stop him from making Dunes afterwards. Moreover, despite The NorthmanRobert Eggers is far from being cooked: between his remake of Nosferatu in difficulty and the development of a mini-series on Rasputin, the gentleman already has a lot to do before attempting a breakthrough in the eyes of the general public.

All thanks to the “wide field?? Where is that the center left found the competitiveness in the challenges of ballotsfrom Verona to Catanzaropassing through Alexandria or Parma And Piacenza. The basis of the success of Pd and allies it lies above all in the poor ability of the center-right to motivate its voters and get them to vote again in the second round. It is the center of the analysis of the Cattaneo institute which focused in particular on 4 sample cities (Monza, Catanzaro, Parma, Alexandria). In three of these 4 ballots, he takes over the research institute, but also a Sesto San Giovanniwhere the center-right also won, oa Piacenzawhere the center-left has increased the advantage it already had, “the center-right candidate has seen his votes decrease (in absolute value)” and this “makes it plausible the hypothesis that the cause is to be found not only in local dynamics but also arises from national reasons (Lately, the components of this coalition have not shown great cohesion And tuning communicative) or even by a more pronounced propensity of the center-right electorate a desert the polls on the occasion of electoral competitions evidently considered (by the voters themselves) less relevant“. The phenomenon of the dispersion of votes between the first and second round is common to all sides to the benefit of the non-voting area, but the point is that “the loss is everywhere greater (sometimes much greater)” right in the center-right.

The premise of the analysis signed by Salvatore Vassallo And Rinaldo Vignati is that “the results of the local elections are subject to different interpretations, on both sides, to derive measures of successes and defeats which are presumed to indicate a trend that can be transposed to the national level, in view of general political competitions. As on other occasions, we must emphasize that such inferences are very problematic if not, often, devoid of empirical foundation“. The reasons are different, explain Vassallo and Vignati. For example, there are coalitions of different shapes, there are civic lists, the personal vote for mayors influence the results. And then, add the two analysts, “it is impossible to examine the data” of municipalities with less than 15 thousand inhabitants. Thus, write Vassallo and Vignati, ?we focus on larger provincial capitals?, Where? there is a more pronounced propensity of the electorate, compared to the more peripheral and smaller municipalities, to vote for center-left parties ?. It is for all these reasons that the Cattaneo institute has attempted a “operation truth?Aggregating on the one hand the votes obtained by all the lists referable to the center-right and on the other those of the lists that can be connected to the? broad field ?, ie the Pd, other center-left lists and the M5s. A recalculation, continues Cattaneo, only possible for 95 of the 142 Municipalities so-called major (excluding those of Sicily And Friuli Venezia Giulia because they are not integrated into the data collection system of the Interior Ministry).

Compared to 2019, center-right and center-left in balance
What comes of it? Compared to European of 2019 ?The balance between center-right and? wide field ?(taken as a whole) does not seem to have changed much, as indeed the polls relating to voting intentions for general political elections indicate. The reason why it is believed that the center-right has a better chance of winning the political elections is that it is presumed to be able to find more easily an agreement internally and converge on common candidates in single-member districts with respect to the ‘campo largo’ made up of the many streams into which the area of center left and the 5 star movement“. And vice versa “the performance of the ‘campo largo’ in these administrative offices appears (in public communication) oversized due to the usual greater attention paid to major urban centers. These (more evident) successes of the center-left seem to be determined by the fact that in various cities of medium to large size the different components of that area managed to converge on candidates capable, in turn, of collecting transversal consentswhile the center-right split, focusing in some cases on overly ‘identity’ candidates (such as a Verona), in others without a clear political identity (such as a Catanzaro) “.

Monza, Catanzaro, Parma, Alessandria: because the ?campo largo? won
The analysis on Monza, Catanzaro, Parma, Alexandria confirms this trend, explains the Cattaneo institute. In the capital of the Brianzafor example, turnout fell by about ten percentage points (from 46.6% to 36.8%), but if Paolo Pilotto (center left) held and even increased its absolute votes (from 17,767 to 18,307), probably also attracting votes from 1656352653 289 What is behind the center rights defeats in the ballotscandidates excluded from the ballot, on the other side the outgoing mayor Dario Allevi – who had the advantage in the first round – in 15 days he lost over 3 thousand votes on the street (from 20,891 to 17,445).

To Alexandria the dynamics were similar, explains Cattaneo. Decrease in turnout by about ten points (from 46.7 to 37.1%), drop in the outgoing mayor (Lega Nord) Gianfranco Cuttica of Revigliasco between first and second round (13,805 become 12,225), increase of the opponent – later elected mayor – Giorgio Abonante which went from 13,214 to 14,590 votes, also thanks to votes from the excluded (in this case the consistent “civic” baptized by Action Giovanni Barosini who had taken nearly 15 percent in the first round).

TO Parma is Michele Guerra (center left) both Pietro Vignali (center right without Brothers of Italy) expanded their electoral bases in the first round despite the collapse in voter participation (over 12 percentage points less): the candidate then elected mayor went from 32,567 to 37,319, the former mayor returned to politics from 15,666 to 19,062 . “Vignali – explains the Cattaneo institute in his analysis – would have confiscated a substantial share (62%) of the votes of the candidate of the Brothers of Italy, but this was not enough to allow any comeback, since on the voters of the minor candidates ( those that in the table are indicated as “others” and that, overall, constituted a significant reserve of votes) Guerra proved much more attractive “.

In the end Catanzaro, where the turnout also recorded a collapse between the first and second round (-23%). Yet the newly elected mayor Nicola Fiorita (center left) has increased its votes, from just under 15 thousand to almost 18 thousand, while Valerio Donato he left on the field the beauty of 8 thousand preferences (from 20,768 in the first round to 12,778). Those votes mostly went into abstention, despite the electoral pool coming from Wanda Ferro (candidate of the Brothers of Italy who ran alone in the first round) was “loyal” to the coalition.

1656352653 919 What is behind the center rights defeats in the ballots“The center-right loses more than the center-left towards non-voting”
In the processing of data on voting flows, with respect to European of 2019, Cattaneo fixes some main dynamics. The first is that the center-right electorate suffers more substantial losses towards non-voting than those of the center-left. The second is that a significant part of those who voted for M5s in 2019 are dispersed in abstention. The third: i passages of voters from center-right to center-left (or vice versa) are quite limited (and mostly equivalent) in the cities of North (Alessandria, Monza, Parma) while they are very consistent in that of South (Catanzaro). “It is clear – conclude Vassallo and Vignati – that four cities are not a sufficient sample to be able to draw general conclusions, but this observation agrees with the fact that in the South, as is known from a long tradition of historical and political studies, ‘personal’ factors and ‘particularistic’ have a much greater weight on politics than in the North (and, consequently, in the cities of the South the identifying force of party symbols and alignments is less) ?.

  • la quantité de vos repas?;

À long terme, cette hormone va :

  • entraîner une diminution de la synthèse des protéines et donc de la masse musculaire?;
  • favoriser le stockage de la graisse corporelle?;

  • faire du yoga ;
  • s’initier à la méditation ;
  • faire de la cohérence cardiaque ;

À long terme, cette hormone va :

  • entraîner une diminution de la synthèse des protéines et donc de la masse musculaire?;
  • favoriser le stockage de la graisse corporelle?;

  • faire du yoga ;
  • s’initier à la méditation ;
  • faire de la cohérence cardiaque ;

Most biological materials, for example, amino acids, fossils, sedimentary rocks, plants, microbes, proteins and lipids, have strong organic fluorescence signals that can be detected by specialized scanning cameras. In a study published in Nature Scientific Reports recently, the research team reported that the Biofinder is so sensitive that it can accurately detect the bio-residue in fish fossils from the 34-56 million year-old Green River formation.

?The Biofinder is the first system of its kind,? said Anupam Misra, lead instrument developer and researcher at the Hawai?i Institute of Geophysics and Planetology at the UH Manoa School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST). ?At present, there is no other equipment that can detect minute amounts of bio-residue on a rock during the daytime. Additional strengths of the Biofinder are that it works from a distance of several meters, takes video and can quickly scan a large area.?

Though the Biofinder was first developed in 2012 by Misra, advances supported by the NASA PICASSO program culminated in the latest color version of the compact Biofinder.

Finding evidence of biological residue in a vast planetary landscape is an enormous challenge. So, the team tested the Biofinder?s detection abilities on the ancient Green River fish fossils and corroborated the results through laboratory spectroscopy analysis, scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy.

?There are some unknowns regarding how quickly bio-residues are replaced by minerals in the fossilization process,? said Misra. ?However, our findings confirm once more that biological residues can survive millions of years, and that using biofluorescence imaging effectively detects these trace residues in real time.?

The search for life ? which may be existing or extinct ? on planetary bodies is one of the major goals of planetary exploration missions conducted by NASA and other international space agencies.

?If the Biofinder were mounted on a rover on Mars or another planet, we would be able to rapidly scan large areas quickly to detect evidence of past life, even if the organism was small, not easy to see with our eyes, and dead for many millions of years,? said Misra. ?We anticipate that fluorescence imaging will be critical in future NASA missions to detect organics and the existence of life on other planetary bodies.?

?The Biofinder?s capabilities would be critical for NASA?s Planetary Protection program, for the accurate and no-invasive detection of contaminants such as microbes or extraterrestrial biohazards to or from planet Earth,? said Sonia J. Rowley, the team biologist and co-author on the study.

Misra and colleagues are applying to have the opportunity to send the Biofinder on a future NASA mission.

?The detection of such biomarkers would constitute groundbreaking evidence for life outside of planet Earth,? said Misra.
