Led by Jeffrey Mills, PhD, and Jeffrey Strawn, MD, the UC cross-college collaborative research was recently published in the journal Psychiatric Services.

Strawn, professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience in UC?s College of Medicine and a UC Health adolescent psychiatrist, said that previous research has concluded that people seeking treatment for depression with lower income and less education have worse outcomes because of a lack of access to quality health care, but it is hard to isolate socioeconomic factors as they are often intertwined.

The research team analyzed data from a very large clinical trial known as CO-MED that enrolled 665 patients seeking treatment for depression. In the randomized trial, all patients had the same access to treatment without differences due to health insurance or income.

Study results

After controlling for sex, age and treatment type following 12 weeks of antidepressant medication treatment in the study, the team?s analysis found patients who were non-white improved 11.3% less compared to white patients. Those who were unemployed saw 6.6% less improvement compared to employed patients. Compared to patients in the 75th percentile of income distribution, patients having income at the 25th percentile reduced improvement by 4.8%.

Strawn noted the findings are still preliminary, but he was particularly interested to find that patients without a college degree had 9.6% less improvement compared to college graduates.

?We think about these things in terms of access, we think about them in terms of income inequality, and I realize that education does track with those, but just having a college degree while controlling for all of these other factors still had a significant impact,? said Strawn.

The researchers also examined the effect of the combination of socioeconomic factors, since the individual factors are often correlated, Mills said. Patients who were non-white, unemployed with no degree and had income in the 25th percentile had 26% less improvement compared to patients who were white, employed with a college degree and had income in the 75th percentile.

Mills said that the findings do not negate the fact that a lack of access makes an impact on treatment outcomes, but it does show the importance of including a patients? home environment when analyzing the effectiveness of treatment.

?If you?re going home to a wealthy neighborhood with highly educated parents or spouse, then you?re arguably in a much better environment for the treatment to be effective than if you?re going to a poor neighborhood with other problems,? said Mills, professor of economics in UC?s Carl H. Lindner College of Business.

Strawn said other research suggests patients in resource-poor environments may be affected by greater chronic variable stress, meaning high stress in a pattern that is intermittent and difficult to predict. Other studies suggest chronic variable stress has a worse effect on patients than chronic sustained stress that is more steady, he said.

?So this is, ?I was able to pay my rent this month, but I?m not sure that I will be able to next month. And I have a job right now, but I don?t know that I will next month,’? Strawn said. ?So it?s just the impact of all those things as well as maybe having relatives or kids who have fewer educational resources or other job-related stress, or potentially other health problems, and you?re still running into those same barriers in terms of access and cost and support there.?

Research application

The study findings have the potential to impact clinical trials by designing studies that pay better attention to socioeconomic variables that may have been previously overlooked, Strawn said.

?When we don?t control for these variables, which we often do not in our clinical trials because of differences in populations, we may miss detecting an effective treatment because its effect is obscured,? Strawn said. ?So it can potentially jeopardize our treatment development by not accounting for these factors.?

Strawn said those treating patients every day can use the knowledge from the study in a more straightforward approach. While removing barriers of access to treatment is important, he said clinicians must also acknowledge that a patient?s socioeconomic environment may be affecting their ability to get better with treatment when measuring progress and crafting future treatment plans.

Mills said the research also has important implications when crafting and implementing economic policy, such as the recently passed infrastructure bill or ongoing discussions on the minimum wage. The impact of a policy on an individual?s socioeconomic environment, and subsequently their mental health, is not typically considered, he said.

?Someone employed at a higher wage has a chance to improve their socioeconomic status and environment, and so they?re definitely less likely to get mental health problems,? he said. ?If people with higher socioeconomic status do get mental health problems, what we?re showing is they?re more likely to improve if they get treatment.?

Team science

In the past, two researchers with different specialties in different colleges within a university may have never worked together on research like this, but the collaboration shows the benefit of what is called team science, a transdisciplinary approach to research.

Strawn explained that traditional multidisciplinary research often looks like a psychiatrist, a neurologist and a psychologist all within the College of Medicine working together on a project. While that has its place, team science works across disciplines and involves completely separate sets of expertise, concepts and approaches.

?We think of multidisciplinary as being kind of the fruit salad where you have your grapes and your bananas, but everything is still distinct,? Strawn said. ?And then you have your transdisciplinary, where things are really blended and it?s difficult to tell whose contributions are whose. That?s probably more like the fruit smoothie of disciplinary integration. I think that?s hopefully what we?ve achieved.?

Mills said he has previously seen colleagues expected to closely collaborate who never published a paper together because their skill sets were too similar and they did not need each other to move forward. Alternatively, Mills and Strawn have interest in each other?s field and bring varying, complementary skill sets to the research.

?It?s further than just multidisciplinary, because if I get together with my colleagues, we still have had very similar training. We use the same jargon, we have similar ideas,? Mills said. ?There?s not the same cross pollination in stepping out of your field and thinking about other topics and giving each other ideas and concepts that you may not have thought about.?

Moving forward, the researchers want to continue the research by combining data from other depression trials to produce more powerful results with a larger dataset.

Francesco Bianconi Perduto insieme a te è il nuovo singolo con Malika Ayane.

Scrive così sui suoi profili social Bianconi:

?Perduto insieme a te?

Now that horror auteur Jordan Peele is returning to the big screen with his new film Nope, audiences are guaranteed to get a healthy dose of terror that will send them fleeing from the theater. The horror genre has spooked viewers since the beginning of film history, but certain movies have found a way to scare as much of their audience as possible.

Whether its supernatural horror like in The Conjuring, or downright gross films like The Human Centipede 2, some films push viewers to their absolute breaking point. Though there are many classic chillers, users on Ranker took to the site to vote for the films that they were too scared to finish watching.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

It (1990)

Tim Curry in Stephen King's It

Generally considered one of Stephen King’s best TV adaptations, It attempted to capture one of the author’s densest tomes. Set in the 1960s and 1990s, a group of friends band together to stop a mysterious and deadly being that manifests itself as a clown named Pennywise.

Essentially sparking the “scary clown” phase of horror, King’s story featured a wide variety of interesting characters and freaky scenes. Because so many viewers saw It when they were younger, a lot of the scariest moments have stuck with fans over three decades since the TV movie’s release.

The Green Inferno (2013)

Lots of bloody hands in The Green Inferno.

Attempting to recreate the magic of classic grindhouse horror films like Cannibal Holocaust, Eli Roth’s The Green Inferno took its horrors to the jungles of the Amazon. A group of student activists travel to South America to protest the destruction of the rainforest and quickly find themselves captured by the indigenous peoples who live there.

While some horror movies are hard to get through due to their terrifying nature, this was not completely true for The Green Inferno. Instead, many people struggled to finish it due to its controversial elements (including how the movie depicted indigenous peoples and their culture). Some also struggled to get through it for its excessive violence and weak plot. While Eli Roth has certainly made some memorable horror movies in the past, this was definitely not his best work.

Hereditary (2018)

Toni Collette in Hereditary

Bursting on the scene as one of the most original horror films in years, Hereditary was as cinematic as it was terrifying. While dealing with the death of the matriarch, a grieving family is plagued by a series of horrific, and possibly supernatural events.

While also making subtle statements about grief and loss, director Ari Aster delivered some of horror cinema’s scariest moments. Pulling its inspiration from many film sources, Hereditary builds its tension slowly until the entire thing explodes in a shower of surreal horror, with a ghostly slant. What makes the film so scary is that it finds many ways to frighten its audience, and the viewer is constantly kept guessing as to what will happen next.

Ringu (1998)

Ringu 1998 Sadako Close-Up Eye

While most fans are familiar with the American remake from several years later, Ringu stands head and shoulders above its copy. A journalist and her husband fall down a dark rabbit hole while investigating a mysterious videotape that is said to kill the person that watches it within seven days.

With its unique, J-Horror style, Ringu slowly builds its creepy tension until the viewer is practically crawling in their seat with fright. The film combines its slow pace with shocking moments of terror keep the audience off-balance throughout. One of the scariest aspects of the film is that the locations are all very plain and it is clear that the events of the story could happen anywhere.

Ju-On: The Grudge (2002)

Ju-On The Grudge 2002

Proving to be one of the best Japanese horror films of all time, Ju-on: The Grudge pushed the boundaries of what was possible in supernatural horror. A volunteer social worker is assigned to look into a case and finds that she is haunted by a vengeful spirit that resides in the house she visited.

Drawing its ghost designs from Japanese folklore, The Grudge‘s terrifying spirits are quite simple and yet effective. Using sound, along with visuals, the film ratchets up the terror by introducing frightening children. The film was so effective with its terror that even the watered down, American remake is horrifying.

The Conjuring (2013)

Lorraine Warren looking at a music box in The Conjuring

Supposedly drawing its story from the case files of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, The Conjuring added another dimension to the supernatural. Called to help out, two noted paranormal researchers attempt to free a family from a supernatural force that is occupying their farmhouse.

Combining elements of ghost stories with demonic possession, The Conjuring opened the door to a whole new cinematic world of terror. While its sequels went in strange directions, the original film is down-to-earth with its approach and slowly builds suspense throughout. Using the medium of film to showcase strange and frightening visuals, the film is a slow burn with a big payoff.

Insidious (2010)

Taking the ghost story in new directions was a difficult task, but Insidious quickly proved it was still possible to showcase an entirely new vision in horror. A family recruits a psychic’s help when they begin to suspect that their comatose son may be trapped in a frightening netherworld known as The Further.

Variety is the name of the game when it comes to Insidious, and the movie provides a wealth of frightening ghosts throughout. Not relying exclusively on one character design, the ghouls in the film are numerous, and each reflects certain primal fears that the audience has. Building slowly, the film’s climax plunges the viewer into the terrifying world of The Further for even more chills.

The Descent (2005)

Sarah escapes the cave in The Descent

Monsters are scary enough, but by adding in an element of claustrophobia to its mix, The Descent proved to be a terrifying tale. A group of friends go on a spelunking expedition through a series of caves. Things take a dark turn when they are trapped inside and find themselves pursued by a group of subterranean human-like predators.

Benefiting from its creepy uses of sound, The Descent is best enjoyed in silence and will surely have the audience’s skin-crawling throughout. The film is essentially a tale of two horrors as the first half plays on many viewers’ fears of confined spaces, and second on more primal fears of death.

The Exorcist (1973)

The Exorcist 1973 Regan MacNeil with Father Merrin and Father Karras Levitating

When discussing the scariest films of all time, one movie has consistently been in the conversation since its release. The Exorcist is the story of a young girl named Reagan who is possessed by a demon and must be exorcised by a grieving priest and a mysterious priest, who is an expert in demons.

Every aspect of The Exorcist is dripping with fright, from its creepy soundtrack to the horrifying visual of a possessed little girl. Director William Friedkin’s realistic style of filmmaking only helps to add to the terror as things go from bad to worse throughout. While the stories were conflated for promotional purposes, The Exorcist had viewers literally running from the theaters in terror when it was first released.

The Human Centipede 2 (2011)

A man laughs while covered in blood from The Human Centipede 2

Coming as a follow-up to the ultimate dare film, The Human Centipede, the sequel brought things into reality like no other horror franchise had before. Inspired by the fictional story from the first film, a desperate loner concocts a plan of kidnapping and murder in order to recreate the fictional doctor’s evil deeds.

Given that the movie is banned in several countries, including the UK, for being “potentially obscene and sexually violent” (via The Hollywood Reporter), it’s not surprising that some struggle to even go near the movie. Not only had the first movie been deemed controversial because of its excessive violence and unnecessary graphic images but even critics struggled to review it (including Roger Ebert). It’s certainly not a movie that fans will be rewatching in a hurry.

Diabetes, 2022; DOI: 10.2337/db21-0706

The results were published in the Journal Diabetes on March 15, 2022.

A worrying trend

Maternal obesity and type 2 diabetes are on the rise. Over 30% of women of childbearing age in Western and Asian countries are classified as obese. Meanwhile, 630 million people are expected to be living with type 2 diabetes by 2045. Children born to obese mothers or mothers with type 2 diabetes have an increased risk of diabetes, even after going on to live healthy lives.

?With the growth of maternal obesity, a worrying cycle is forming where the risks of diabetes gets passed down from generation to generation,? says assistant professor Joji Kusuyama from Tohoku University?s Interdisciplinary Institute for Frontier Sciences (FRIS), and lead author of the study. ?Stopping this cycle is a critical and pressing medical problem.?

In the research group with Kusuyama was Laurie Goodyear, Nathan Makarewicz, Brent Albertson, Ana Alves-Wagner, Royce Conlin, Noah Prince, Christiano Alves, Krithika Ramachandran, and Michael Hirshman from the Joslin Diabetes Center; Chisayo Kozuka from RIKEN?s Center for Integrative Medical Sciences; Toshihisa Hatta from Kanazawa?s Medical University; Yang Xiudong and Yang Xia from the University of Texas at Houston; and Ryoichi Nagatomi from Tohoku University?s Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering.

Previously, the group showed that exercise during pregnancy has tremendous benefits on an offspring?s metabolic health, demonstrating that placenta-derived SOD3, which stands for supuroexide dismutase 3, plays a key role in transmitting the benefits of maternal exercise to the offspring. Building on this, the team set out to understand how SOD3 prevents the negative effects of obesity being passed from mother to child and found that SOD3 inhibited high-fat diet-induced abnormalities in the offspring?s glucose metabolism.

The link between maternal and childhood obesity

Histone methylation plays a fundamental role in epigenetic modification ? heritable changes to strands of DNA that do not affect the inherited base pairs. Methyl group (-CH3) attaches to an amino acid in the tail of histone proteins that wrap DNA, sometimes activating gene expression, sometimes inhibiting it.

When a mother consumes a diet heavy in fat, the histone H3 trimethylation H3K4me3 gets decreased in the fetal liver and hinders the expression of glucose metabolism genes.

This, the researchers discovered, is caused by two things. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) ? oxygen in a reactivated and activated state which aids the body?s metabolism and cellular functions ? becomes elevated. Meanwhile, WDR82, a key protein that regulates histone methyltransferase, becomes oxidative, impairing protein functions.

The harmful effects of a maternal high-fat diet on an offspring?s metabolism are reversed by maternal exercise. Genetic manipulation demonstrated that placental SOD3 is indispensable for the protective effects of maternal exercise on offspring.

The study also highlighted how crucial exercise is for negating this. When the researchers infused N-acetylcysteine (NAC), an antioxidant that boosts performance in the liver, into the fetal liver, it did not reproduce the results of SOD3. This suggests the naturally produced SOD3 from exercise during pregnancy is pivotal for the offspring?s metabolic wellbeing.

Implications for the future

Given the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of exercise, encouraging mothers to exercise could help reverse the alarming rates of obesity and type-2 diabetes. The merits of SOD3 may not be limited to the metabolism stresses Kusuyama. ?There may be wider benefits of this protein on other organs in the child. We are currently looking into the modifications in placenta tissue brought about by SOD3 that may have positive lifelong impacts on children.?

The authors caution the study is only at the preclinical stage and its applicability to humans requires further studies. Additionally, certain aspects of the signaling pathway require further investigation.

With Huggy Wuggy taking the world of TikTok and YouTube horror by storm, there’s no telling if this viral video trend will stay in the annals of horror-based YouTube content. For as long as there has been the internet, there have been stories and videos shared to make the world a little creepier. From quick seconds long jumpscares to short horror films, they can all be found online.

While movies meant to provoke have existed more or less since the dawn of cinema, these disconcerting downloads and malicious .mp4 files are more of a recent occurrence, with many only taking off in popularity after the debut of YouTube in 2005. Either way, they’ll always be around to disturb viewers with plenty of nightmare fuel to make their dreams less than pleasant.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

I Feel Fantastic

A still from the viral YouTube video I Feel Fantastic.

In 2009, YouTube user Creepyblog uploaded an eerie video titled “I Feel Fantastic” that featured a stiff, scary animatronic wearing a wig and women’s clothing singing a high-pitched song that was seemingly generated via a text-to-speech algorithm. Something from the deepest pits of the uncanny valley, those with an irrational fear of mannequins will want to steer clear of this two-and-a-half-minute long video.

After the video’s debut, rumors circulated that it had been put together by a serial killer and that the clothes seen on the mannequin belonged to his victims. However, the creator was later revealed to be John Bergeron, a man with an innocent?albeit creepy?fascination with singing animatronics.

This Is A Special Time

A still from the infamous Little Baby's Ice Cream commercial "This Is A Special Time."

Perhaps one of the most unnerving advertisements of all time, “This Is A Special Time” was a commercial for the Philadelphia-based Little Baby’s Ice Cream and featured a woman standing before the camera covered head-to-toe in what looked like vanilla ice cream. As she scooped some of the desert from the top of her head and ate it, a voiceover extolled the benefits of eating the dairy treat.

RELATED: 10 Scary Movies That Aren’t Horror Films

Obviously, this advertisement was meant to provoke, and the gimmick seems to have worked, as the video has over eighteen million views on YouTube. Unfortunately, Little Baby’s Ice Cream closed in 2019.

Salad Fingers

A still from the Salad Fingers viral video series.

Salad Fingers is a thirteen-part animated horror web series that originated on the content-sharing site Newgrounds in 2004. Created by David Firth, Salad Fingers follows the titular character, a strange, green-skinned man with elongated fingers, living in what’s implied to be a post-apocalyptic wasteland, passing the time by talking with a series of finger puppets.

With weird premises, nails-on-chalkboard background music, and shocking moments of gore and depravity, Salad Fingers is nothing short of haunting. The series continues to this day, though new installments are incredibly infrequent, and the first installment has over 41 million views on YouTube.

Username 666

A screenshot from the viral YouTube video "Username 666."

Uploaded in 2008, “Username 666” sees a hapless internet user punching www.youtube.com/666 into their browser and refreshing until their taken to a heavily distorted, hellish version of the video-sharing platform. They experience a string of strange tech-related oddities until they attempt to sign out of Windows only to find themselves permanently stuck on the cursed webpage.

While so out-of-date as to be almost comical, Username 666 is an excellent example of early viral internet horror, and those nostalgic for YouTube’s early days may want to give this one a watch.

Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared

A still from the YouTube video series Don't Hug Me I'm Scared.

Debuting on YouTube in 2011, Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared is a collection of six short videos intended to come across as a child’s show akin to Seasame Street or The Muppets Show. While each episode beings with standard genre fare, it eventually devolves into a dissonance of disarming and disturbing occurrences.

With over 68 million views, the first episode of Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared is must-see viewing for fans of strange videos. The series was intended to lampoon the sometimes-coercive nature of children’s programming, and an actual television series is supposedly in the works.

The Max Headroom Incident

A still from the Max Headroom TV hijacking incident.

The Max Headroom Incident is perhaps the most famous television broadcast intrusion of all time. Taking place in November of 1987, an unknown hijacker interrupted 90 seconds of a Doctor Who television broadcast in the Chicago area, interjecting a bizarre video of a man in a Max Headroom mask mumbling and screaming erratically.

While it originally went down as a strange footnote, the incident gained renewed infamy after it went viral on the internet decades after the event took place. Part of the fascination surrounding the incident likely stems from the fact that the hijacker was never caught and that it’s tough to discern what they may have wanted or even what exactly is being said in the video.

Teddy Has An Operation

A still from the YouTube video "Teddy Has An Operation."

Uploaded in April 2012, “Teddy Has An Operation” is a strange short film that sees a doctor inspecting the disturbingly-fleshy innards of a teddy bear that has apparently fallen ill. After pulling things like crumpled cigarettes and action figures out of the bear’s organs, he’s sewen back up, supposedly good as new.

“Teddy Has An Operation” isn’t exactly scary, but it is unremittingly weird. It was uploaded by zefrank1, a user otherwise known for their comedy videos. It could be construed as a strange type of surreal comedy, though that’s ultimately for viewers to decide for themselves.

Pokopokoshopping

A still from the YouTube video "pokopokoshopping."

Created by YouTube user nana825763?the same user who uploaded the “Username 666″ video?”pokopokoshopping” debuted in 2014 and features two cute puppet characters hosting some sort of shopping-themed show. Things fly off the rails pretty quickly as flesh growths begin to appear on walls, products, and the characters themselves, one of the show’s hosts is disemboweled, and spontaneous fires begin to melt the set.

RELATED: 10 Scary Scenes In Otherwise Comedic Movies

While it’s only amassed 2.2 million views in eight years, it’s certainly a YouTube horror gem, as if just about everything on nana825763’s channel.

Dining Room Or There Is Nothing

A still from the creepy YouTube video "Dining Room or There Is Nothing."

“Dining Room or There Is Nothing” actually made the rounds across digital forums in the days before the creation of YouTube, but the video attained renewed fame when user David Earle uploaded it to their channel in 2006. It’s a roughly minute-long clip of a mannequin-like girl speaking backward and falling face-first into a bowl before the footage is reversed and she’s revealed to have said “there is nothing.”

This video is utterly terrifying and appears to have been made for no purpose other than to shock. It’s the sort of thing that one desperately tries to forget after viewing.

The Backrooms (Found Footage)

A still of a strange monster seen in Kane Pixel's The Backrooms (Found Footage) short film.

The Backrooms is an internet urban legend that first gained traction in 2019 following a series of eerie posts on popular internet message boards. The mythos surrounds an extra-dimensional series of nearly-endless hallways that traps those unfortunate enough to fall out of reality.

In early 2022, enterprising YouTuber Kane Pixels uploaded a nine-minute short film of a hapless explorer roaming the titular territory, coming across iconic backrooms locations and getting chased by anomalous monsters. The video was the first of a series that establishes original lore surrounding the backrooms concept.

Created by YouTube user nana825763?the same user who uploaded the “Username 666″ video?”pokopokoshopping” debuted in 2014 and features two cute puppet characters hosting some sort of shopping-themed show. Things fly off the rails pretty quickly as flesh growths begin to appear on walls, products, and the characters themselves, one of the show’s hosts is disemboweled, and spontaneous fires begin to melt the set.
